God Can Help You Change

Admitting our problems is only the first step. After that, we must invite God to work, because he is the one who can change any problem. When Jesus was explaining how difficult it is for a rich man to enter heaven, his disciples were taken aback. They wondered who could possibly be saved. Jesus replied, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God” (Mark 10:27). With people, change may be difficult, even impossible—but not with God. God is bigger than our problems, no matter what they are. If you’ve believed that you simply can’t change, acknowledge that that is a lie. With God, all things are possible.

For example, my wife always believed she was a night person. Unquestionably, Amy came to life at the end of the day. Mornings were another story. Her family warned me before we married, “Don’t talk to her until she’s been awake for awhile, or you’re taking your life into your own hands.” They were exaggerating—a little.

After we were married, holding jobs, and starting a family, rising early became more important for Amy to be successful in her roles. Her whole life, she’d been told she wasn’t a morning person. During her prayer time, she realized God could change her. She told me she was praying that God would make her better in the morning. Almost overnight, Amy changed. Like sunlight bursting suddenly through dark clouds, Amy’s mornings transformed. Even when others didn’t believe change was possible, Amy did. More important, God did.

Many Christian Atheists give up hope. I tried to change, but I can’t. Nothing ever works for me. You don’t understand. This is just the way I am. It’s time to reject the lies of the evil one and embrace the truth of God. If you’ll allow God to change you, I’ll share a few steps my counselor showed me to allow God to be bigger than any earthly master.
